European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
